Sold“Bouillotte”, in Louis XVI style, by the French ebenist François Linke, late 19th century, hardwood frame, rosewood veneered, in typical form field and diamond shaped marquetry, polished in traditional handcraft technique, fluted feet, finely chased gilt bronze fittings, white/grey – ‘Arabescato’ marble top with profiled top border, signed F. Linke on one bronze, height 75 cm, diameter 75 cm, beautiful professionally restored condition.

François LINKE (1855-1946), one of the most important ebenists of the Parisian “Belle Epoque”, came from Pankraz (Bohemia / Austria-Hungary). After studying furniture making in Vienna for two years, he first went to Germany and then to France in 1875, where he worked as a laborer for the well-known cabinetmaker Antoine KRIEGER.After a short stay in Vienna in 1879, he returned to Paris to set up his own studio in 1881.
Initially he produced for his former employer A. Krieger, but he quickly built up his own clientele thanks to his outstanding quality. His collaboration with the sculptor Léon Messagé, who was responsible for the design of the bronzes, was decisive for his future style and stellar career. Together they put together a collection for the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 that made Linke world-famous. He succeeded in creatively combining the classic Louis XV style with Art Nouveau. Works by François Linke are represented in all the world’s major museums and are highly sought-after on the art market.

MAISON MILLET (1853-1918), established in Paris in 1853 by Théodore Millet, was renowned for crafting luxury furniture and gilded bronze objets d’art of exceptional quality, primarily inspired by 18th-century styles. The firm’s reputation for excellence led to collaborations with other esteemed cabinetmakers, including François Linke, to meet high demand. Maison Millet achieved significant acclaim, securing a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris and the Grand Prix in 1900. The company operated as a manufacturer until 1902 and continued as a retailer until 1918.

Georges-François ALIX (1846-1906). Important furniture maker and bronze doré producer in Paris in the 2nd half of the 19th century. He had an excellent clientele thanks to the outstanding quality of his products and also supplied his marquetry, leaves and bronzes to the best of his trade, such as François Linke, Maison Krieger and Maison Millet. He was an outstanding craftsman, enjoyed an excellent reputation and designed his furniture himself, although he only employed 2 workers in his studio.

Paul SORMANI (1817-1877) founded his company in 1847 and also took over his brother’s business in 1858. Above all, the extremely precise construction, always made of oak wood, was rightly regarded as unrivalled. In 1855, 1862 and 1867, Sormani took part in the world exhibitions in Paris and London and won numerous awards and medals. The company was commercially very successful and employed up to 300 craftsmen at 10, rue Charlot, shortly before the founder’s death in 1877. From 1877, the company was run by the widow Ursule Marie Philippine and his son Paul-Charles under the name “Sormani Veuve et Fils” until 1914. In 1889, the company won the Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
