Description

Elegant French salon and writing table after a famous model by Jean-François Oeben from the 18th century. This exquisite piece was crafted in Paris in the second half of the 19th century by the renowned cabinetmaker Paul Sormani (1817–1877).

The solid oak body is richly veneered with amaranth and other fine exotic woods, featuring elaborate panel-shaped and ornamental marquetry. The surface is traditionally French-polished, enhancing the depth and luster of the precious veneers.

With four drawers in total – including a writing drawer with fold-down front – it offers both functionality and elegance. The table is adorned with superbly chased and gilt-bronze mounts, partly featuring festoon and ram-head motifs, and is fitted with a refined marble top.
Signed on the bronze mounts: “Paul Sormani, Paris”.

Presented in excellent, professionally restored condition.
Note: Subject to CITES regulations.

Historical significance:
The original model by Oeben, one of the most important royal ébénistes of Louis XV, is held in the Wallace Collection, London.
Sormani achieved international acclaim, exhibiting at major World’s Fairs and employing up to 300 craftsmen in his Paris atelier.
