Description
Decorative pair of reclining lions, likely England, executed in the first half of the 20th century, after celebrated models by the neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova (1757–1822). The figures are fully sculpted in Coade stone, a weather-resistant artificial stone highly prized in England during the 18th and 19th centuries for fine decorative objects.
Each lion rests on a later marble base with bronze feet, adding elegance and display appeal. On the underside, each figure contains an inserted metal medallion, currently concealed, which may provide information on maker or provenance.
Presented in a well-preserved and cleaned condition – a tasteful classic decorative ensemble.
